Today, we have the privilege to introduce a remarkable individual who is at the forefront of neuroscience and medicine: Dr. Sergiu Pasca, MD, a member of the Timothy Syndrome Foundation Scientific Advisory Board.
Originally from Romania, Dr. Pasca’s journey into the world of medicine began with his training as a doctor. But it was when he joined Stanford University for further studies in 2009 that he started doing some truly groundbreaking work.
Picture this: Dr. Pasca figured out a way to grow tiny versions of Timothy syndrome brains in the lab. Yes, you heard that right! Using skin cells from our TS children and other people with brain disorders, he managed to grow these mini-brains, called organoids. These organoids are like little models of the human brain, helping scientists understand how things go wrong in conditions like autism or schizophrenia.
But Dr. Pasca didn’t stop there. He found a way to make these mini-brains even more lifelike by adding special signals. These signals tell the cells how to organize themselves, creating structures that resemble different parts of the brain. It’s kind of like building a miniature city, but inside a petri dish!
Now, besides being a brain wizard, Dr. Pasca also teaches at Stanford and leads some important programs there. He’s passionate about sharing his knowledge and mentoring the next generation of scientists.
His work hasn’t gone unnoticed either. Dr. Pasca has won all sorts of awards for his genius ideas and contributions to science. From being honored by the International Society for Stem Cell Research to being recognized as a TED Speaker, he’s truly a rock star in the world of neuroscience.
But what’s even cooler is that Dr. Pasca doesn’t keep all this brainy stuff to himself. He loves getting people together to talk about brains and share ideas. He’s organized events where scientists from all over the world come together to learn and collaborate.
And get this: Dr. Pasca has just published a paper, “Antisense oligonucleotide therapeutic approach for Timothy Syndrome.” The paper was released this week!
Dr. Sergiu Pasca, the brainiac who’s not only growing brains in a dish and shaping the future of neuroscience, he is providing hope to our T.S. Community.
